Leon Jones is the owner of Leon’s Quality Cuts in Rochester, NY. I was able to meet Leon by bringing a friend in to get their hair cut. I felt that the only way I could really understand the community was by also being a part of it on my off days. Doing this allowed me to have a conversation with Leon without being in “work mode”, so our conversation was very genuine. I was also able to see the way he interacts with the people that come into his shop. After speaking with Leon, I decided to pitch his story to Caroline and my team. Since I had already been to the barber shop, interviewing and photographing him felt much more relaxed and let him open up to us more. He shared details of his past, his relationship with the community, his struggles and how his craft contributes to the healing of the community.
